If you see a nerd on his laptop at a bar, that’s probably me.

By Eric Curl

While my tired ass didn’t see the band I went there for, I’m glad I saw the band that opened for them.

My body shut down at 10 p.m., so I split before swamp metal specialists Black Tusk shut the place down celebrating their new album release – a band I have not seen since their days playing at the now shuttered Jinx on Congress Street – back when I could somehow stay up past 3 a.m.?

I managed to stick around long enough to see the  Savannah-based Maxines though. And I’m glad I did. The band’s “grunge with a side of metal” rocked the house and their energy, if not their sound, reminded me a bit of another favorite I miss seeing at the Jinx.

I sure hope the new Jinx has some early shows for us old timers, when the music venue and bar’s new location opens at 43rd and Whitaker. If not, I hope the opening bands are as great as what I saw Saturday night.

The new Jinx is under construction at 43rd and Whitaker. Eric Curl/April 5, 2024
