Entrance to Club One

Editor’s note: While reviewing building permits, I come across the occasional film permit as well. I figured residents may be curious to know when they may see Savannah on the big screen or streaming channel. Below you will find my first compilation of upcoming projects featuring our city.

The Girl from Plainview will be filming in Savannah this month, according to recently issued film permits. The Hulu series, as reported by IMDB, stars Elle Fanning and is based on a 2017 Esquire article about Michelle Carter, a 17-year-old convicted of involuntary manslaughter after convincing her boyfriend to commit suicide via text.

June saw film permits issued for Expedition Unknown, a Discovery series in which Josh Gates investigates iconic unsolved events, lost cities, buried treasures and other puzzling stories. Filming for an independent film, Lone Star Bull, also took place at multiple local locations, including Club One, in June. The production tells the story of a former military man and bouncer at a nightclub teaming up with a medical student, who performs as a drag queen, to find those responsible for killing the club’s owner, according to IMDB. The filmmaker behind the project David Stoddart has directed a few short films, as well a 2013 documentary, Driven: “The Fastest Woman In The World”, which follows Susie Wolff, determined to be the first woman since 1976 to race in Formula 1, according to the BBC.

A coming Netflix series, First Kill, filmed in Savannah in May. The series based on a short story by Victoria “V.E.” Schwab about a teenage vampire’s plan to make her first kill so she can take her place among a powerful vampire family. The permit was revoked after the production crew failed to adhere to filming requirements while filming in Colonial Park cemetery, as reported by WTOC.
