Oct. 25, 2020 –  The Salvation Army of Savannah hopes to build a new transitional housing shelter on about 12 acres of property owned by the Housing Authority of Savannah, as presented to the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission on Sept. 22.

The property at 2305 Augusta Avenue consists of two undeveloped parcels north of Old West Lathrop Avenue and west of the Interstate 516 on-ramp.

Larry Haskell, with the Salvation Army, told the MPC that the charitable organization’s community shelter at 3100 Montgomery Street is at the end of its life and the proposed facility provides an opportunity to expand and to treat people with dignity, according to the MPC meeting minutes. The Salvation Army expect to serve about 185 people at the site, Haskell said.

Rev. Marsha Buford, president of the West Savannah Community Organization, submitted a letter expressing the organization’s support for the shelter.

However,  a petition indicated at least 96 area residents were opposed to the project and the MPC voted to postpone consideration of the proposal until the Nov. 10 meeting. If approved, the zoning petition would next have to go to the Savannah City Council for consideration.

The proposed shelter would be built on a site that currently consists of two undeveloped parcels north of Old West Lathrop Avenue and west of the Interstate 516 on-ramp.
