“Juneteenth in Savannah” By Eric Curl – June 19, 2022

While Juneteenth is worth celebration, it is important to prevent one form of bondage from being replaced with another. The Racial Equity and Leadership Task Force (REAL) presented their report to the Savannah City Council about eight months ago. Among the findings in the report “Seeing Savannah through a Racial Equity Lens”, was the disproportionate percentage of black males within the jail and prison system. The report of REAL’s findings was designed to encourage the city council and residents to support action to address the serious levels of racial inequities that exist in the community.

The mayor and aldermen adopted the report on Nov. 9. Sometimes studies like these get put on the shelf. Let this post serve as a dust cover.
