“World Domination” by Eric Curl – 01.08.2022

Cartoon background: Parker’s announced in a press release Thursday that Starbucks and Chick-fil-A, in addition to a Parker’s Kitchen, would be opening at the site of the Globe landmark on Savannah’s Southside, as previously reported in October by Savannah Agenda in this Property Matters column. Parker’s founder and CEO Greg Parker said the company now intends to preserve the iconic 1950s-era globe on the site after a previously approved plan to demolish the structure as part of the redevelopment of the site drew public outcry. The revised plans that were recently approved incorporate into the development the former gas storage tank that is painted to resemble Earth, showing a drive-thru entrance going around the globe to a Starbucks service window. Founder and CEO Greg Parker deserves credit for listening to the community following a public outcry to the original plan to demolish the 1950s-era gas storage tank painted to resemble Earth. Still, I felt the plan to open a Starbucks and Chick-Fil-A at the site could not go without a little roasting.
