June 4, 2023 – There’s a goat, parrot, bug man and bunny with no ‘U’. Welcome to my new column, An Introvert’s Outing, based on my always reluctant travels away from the comfortable confines of my home.

Stay engaged Savannah,

Eric Curl

The day outside started at around 11 a.m. at the Live Oak Library’s Bull Street branch, where a late fee awaited. I paid my tab, renewed my books and library card, which apparently expires, and looked through some microfilm of old newspapers (You can read about what I found here).

I got to Starland Yard around 1 p.m. and set up my computer at a high-top table outside the concert area, but in the shade. Ordered two catfish tacos from the Dark Shark Taco Attack food truck and ate while working on the blog as the first band got ready to play. Bob Ross was painting “happy trees” on one TV and a tennis match was on the other.

The first band started and I could hear them pretty well from my seat, so I elected to stay there for the time being and keep my shaved dome out of the sun. (I forgot my hat.)

At about 2:45 p.m. I considered leaving my table and taking a break to watch the band. Then the sun came out from behind the clouds and I changed my mind.

Nothing to look at here …

A woman with a blue parrot on her shoulder arrives with an orange-haired woman who is walking a white goat as it chomped on some plants.

One of the dogs started barking at the goat not too long after.

There is a new painter on the television doing Bob Ross-style painting, but it’s not Bob Ross.

I thought about taking a photo of the goat and parrot, but a lot of people were doing that and I didn’t want to be annoying. You’ll just have to take my word for it. Or check out Starland Yard’s photo on Facebook from February. Apparently, goats are regular visitors there.

A couple, Mike and Katie, just introduced themselves after seeing my tshirt (I was wearing a Savannah Agenda tee). They said they were fans of the site and thanked me for my work. That is the stuff.

Got up and started watching a band around 3:30 p.m.

Talked to a friend, who had tipped me off that HSF was selling the Kiah house. Stood under a tent in the shade because it was “blazing sunshine” outside, like my history teacher used to always say.

Bnny, from Chicago, is the first band I watch and I am so glad I did. They put on a great show and I decide Bob Ross’s imitator can go to hell. I will be staying out in the concert area from now on.

I left the cool confines of the tented area to get a photo of Bnny, then quickly retreated back to the shade.

Interesting outfits of note – one dancing fan up front had a ripped up shirt with illustrations of rats copulating on it.

Chatted a bit with live music lover Larry Jack Sammons, who provides a calendar of upcoming shows on the Hissing Lawns blog. He said he really enjoyed Savannah’s own Basically Nancy, who played some new songs while I, unfortunately, was evading the sun with Bob Ross and company.

The next band, New Orleans-based Sick Thoughts, spurred some slam dancing as the singer sang of his love of Satan.

During a break, I found a couple at the table near the power outlet I needed for my computer. They kindly let me join them. Prison Affair, a band from Barcelona, Spain, then introduced me to the world of “egg-punk,” a sub-genre that combines the weird hyperactive energy of DEVO with more hard-core punk,” according to Christopher Berinato’s Savannah Morning News article about the festival. Sounds about right.

During the next break, I sat on a bench with another couple who said they were fans of my site after they saw my shirt. Andrew is in construction and Courtney operates a yoga studio. Andrew asked me if I sold shirts and I gave him one. He then sent me a donation via Venmo. Much appreciated.

Next act was, Nosebleeeeed, an act I was not expecting at all, in a good way. The performance was comprised of a guy on the small corner stage near the bar banging out drum beats to some electronic sounds and recordings. His sticks broke and he tossed them to the crowd then got another pair and resumed playing. He sweat a lot. I didn’t see any blood, fortunately. Damn good stuff.

Ordered some portabella tacos from Shark Tacos. Sat back down at the bench. Chilled.

Nashville-based Snooper came on with a giant papier-mâché props, including a life-size arcade game, giant magic 8 ball and phone. They were all wearing track suits, except the singer, who were a white and black top and one-armed a papier-mâché barbell during the show.

A guy in tall giant green bug costume blindly made his way around the front of the crowd amid the mosh pit after his friends directed him there and left him to fend for himself.

Deeper, also from Chicago, brought the show to a satisfying end, although I was left wanting more. It was about 9 p.m. when the show shut down. I blogged a bit and then tried to leave but there was a long line to get out. I found the table next to the outlet and plugged in again. Then I went back home and laid in bed for a couple hours thinking about how awesome the show was. Sometimes it’s good to leave the comfort zone.
