Housing Authority votes to reclaim Salvation Army property
Sept. 15, 2026 – The Housing Authority of Savannah voted Sept. 9 to exercise its right to repurchase property sold to the Salvation Army on a portion of the former Bartow Homes site after the organization failed to begin construction within a five-year deadline. The sales contract, which closed May 12, 2021, gave the authority the right to buy back the property at the original purchase price if improvements were not under construction within five years. With construction still not underway, the board directed its attorney to notify the Salvation Army of the decision and authorized the authority’s executive director, chairwoman and attorney to complete the purchase, with closing to occur within 30 days or as soon afterward as possible.
