MPC approves 100-acre Hutchinson Island development plan
The Metropolitan Planning Commission unanimously approved a major amendment on Aug. 4 to a four-parcel portion of the long-stalled Savannah Harbor Planned Development on Hutchinson Island, allowing up to 1,280 residential units along with hotels, restaurants, retail and other commercial uses on about 100 acres. The plan creates a higher-density resort-oriented area and a lower-density residential area along the Back River, with buildings allowed up to six stories or 85 feet. The property owner and master developer, 1776 Savannah Associates, purchased the parcels along with the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa for more than $101 million in December 2025. MPC staff supported the amendment but raised concerns about emergency response on the island, prompting the commission to condition approval on an agreement with the city regarding public safety services.
