June 3, 2023 – ARTS Southeast is an exciting grassroots community arts organization with a mission to make Savannah a destination for art and culture. It supports established and emerging artists and engages a diverse community through creative programming and educational outreach.

Initially established by three artists as Sulfur Studios in 2014, the organization has grown into a vital homebase for Savannah’s art community, providing artist studio space and serving as a springboard for countless projects, collaborations and artistic careers. In 2022, Sulfur Studios became ARTS Southeast Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit organization, to increase community support, diversify outreach and create a sustainable future for the arts in Savannah. ARTS Southeast supports artists through a host of programs: below market-rate studio space for 26 artists, exhibition programming in two on-site galleries and at off-site locations, the international ON::View Artist Residency, Sulfur Street Fairs and First Fridays in Starland, and the semi-annual art + culture magazine, IMPACT.

ARTS Southeast’s inaugural community fundraising campaign, co-chaired by octogenarian art enthusiast Charlie Ellis and young working artist Amelia Jamerson, kicked off on June 2, with a street fair in conjunction with First Fridays in Starland, open studios, and art receptions.

A local philanthropic couple has made a $5,000 lead gift towards the 2023 fundraising goal of $60,000. Executive Director Emily Earl is excited to personally introduce the public to the many programs offered by ARTS Southeast. She says, “Savannah should be an art hub in this region. It’s primed for that, and we can help build and guide that. And anyone can be part of our vision by joining ARTS Southeast as a Supporter!” Information on supporter levels can be found on the organization’s website and donations of any size can be made at ARTSSoutheast.org/donate.

Full details on ARTS Southeast Programs:

IMPACT Magazine: IMPACT is Savannah’s premiere arts + culture magazine. Heavy on visual content, this full color, glossy, 9×12” semi-annual publication features some of the most exciting local and regional artists, writers and creatives with interviews, essays and reviews that give an inside look at what’s going on in the Southeast art scene. Vol. 2 No. 1 will be released at ARTS Southeast’s June First Friday Festivities.

ON::View Residency: The ON::VIEW Artist Residency provides a free, high visibility studio space for an artist to complete a new project, to continue an in-progress endeavor, or to conduct research exploring conceptual, material, performative, and social practices. The studio’s large windows look out onto Bull Street, allowing the artist’s work to be on view to the community at all times. Community events like workshops, performances, public art projects and artist talks offer creative ways to interact with the public. The ON::View Residency supports artists from across the globe, working in all media. The 5th Dimension Apartment, located just blocks from ARTS Southeast + Sulfur Studios, provides complimentary housing for visiting Artist Residents, making the ON::View Residency Program the only international residency program in Savannah.

Main Gallery: Since its founding in 2014, the Main Gallery at Sulfur Studios has hosted hundreds of events, from thought-provoking exhibitions to musical performances, artist talks, and workshops. It now hosts curated exhibitions throughout the year in 2-month rotations, supporting local and regional artists as well as presenting work from artists around the globe. The gallery presents a variety of media, from photography, painting, and drawing to sculpture, site-specific installations, film and new media. Past exhibitions have explored inventive uses of material, the significance of community, the value of collaboration, and the history of both our region and the artists who inhabit it.

Supporter Gallery: The Supporter Gallery at Sulfur Studios, established in 2022, is a dedicated space where Artist Supporters have three exhibition opportunities per year. Encircling our central gallery and running along a loop of artist studios, it is a high-visibility space in the heart of our community, showcasing our Supporters and helping to set the tone of our creative space. Running in tandem with Main Gallery exhibitions and Artist Residency projects, it exists in conversation with events throughout the year. The Supporter Gallery strives to support and uplift emerging and established artists through every step of the exhibition process.

Drive Thru Art Box: ARTS Southeast invites 4 artists per year to reimagine an old Drive Thru menu box through site-specific installations, transforming this unique venue through their individual approaches to making. Past installations have turned the Art Box into a site for sculpture, a layered light box, a rotating exhibition of drawings, and more. Artists are invited to speak about their work at Happy Hour Artist Talks, which give the community more insight into the inspiration behind each project while enjoying the fare at Green Truck Pub. The Drive Thru Art Box is located in the parking lot of Green Truck Pub at 2430 Habersham St., and can be viewed anytime of day or night.

Supporting Local and Regional Artists: ARTS Southeast is proud to present work by local and regional artists including John Alleyne, Harry DeLorme, Susan Earl, Axelle Kieffer, Phil Musen, Faran Riley, Ruth Sykes, Matt Toole, Lisa D. Watson, and more. We also present dozens of artists, writers, and makers from the Southeast in the Sulfur Shop, which includes ceramics, wearables, leather goods, jewelry, books, zines, records, and more.

Community Partners: The City of Savannah, Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, Live Oak Public Libraries, Savannah Cultural Arts Center, Deep Center, Savannah State University, Georgia Southern University, Savannah College of Art & Design
