Nov. 5, 2023 — I caught up with Adrienne Berkland in their gallery to see what was new. Known for their painted bar scenes of various beloved haunts, we chatted about their new series of skulls.

“Skulls! They’ve really been helping me process lately.”

ARTS Southeast’s lovely fall shindig on Friday along Bull Street in the Starland District featured food, music, dance and of course, plenty of art.

The chilly evening provided a perfect backdrop for the talented Stardust Pixxies, a spectacle of neon and fire in all their forms. The Hungry Vegan and Smash Burger kept us fed and Cosmic Corner provided spiritual guidance as the raffle was well underway. DJ MK and DJ Miss Paradise set the mood for performer and spectator alike to dance, while our visual artists busied themselves with a live painting wall. Each artist demarcating pieces of a vision for the next artist, and the next one, until the wall is completed.

The newest edition of IMPACT Magazine was on display. Exhibitions featuring over forty artists covered the walls, including Berkland’s skulls.

Done in bright blues and pinks, textured, it was Berkland’s first foray into working with encaustics.

Through the maze of people, I found Faran Riley’s gallery. A space that felt velvety and soft, but intense in a good way. The soundscape of her work will remain a delicious part of the experience because, as any sensory sensitive person will tell you, it does matter how jewelry sounds. A multi-faceted artist with a fascination in shell and mineral materials, I found more than enough reason to enjoy her beautiful beading work and intricate drawings of barnacles, marshes, and all things that drift in the sea.

Meaningful Boutique, another staple at Sulfur Studios, graced us with modern to vintage, thoughtful pieces for each of our collective closets. Featuring an impressive range of sizes and eras, there was something special to be found for all curated by Kieanie Lee-Parker.

Lastly, I met Cat Counihan among her and Faran Riley’s collaboration: Midnight in the Garden of Earthly Delights. A triptych inspired by Savannah, and Hieronymus Bosch’s original trip. Reimagined in our backyard, the Savannah natives rendered our community’s ghosts, ghoulish tourists, and of course, Warren. Cat’s work also includes a series of lino prints of once abandoned homes from her adolescence, now converted from family homes into vacation rentals. The main gallery features LOOK!, on display till Dec 16, with an impressive roster of artists with a wide range of work.

Also displayed, “Off the Wall,” a group exhibition of affordable small works by ARTS Southeast Supporters. In ON::View, Atlanta-based artist Timothy Short had the finale of his residency to wrap up the successful night of celebrating all that Savannah has to offer in our artistic community. ARTS Southeast is a local non-profit with the goal of promoting Savannah as a premiere arts destination in the Southeast.
