July 7, 2022 – Savannah’s budding movie stars can still pursue their dream in Los Angeles, they will just have to wait a bit longer if they want to wake up in the City of Angels without a layover in between.
Breeze Airways recently delayed plans to implement nonstop flights from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), a service priority of airport officials.
The new low-fare airline was originally supposed to start flying from SAV to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on July 1, however, the service was postponed until February for all three markets where they were starting, said airport spokesperson Lori Lynah. The airline has had trouble completing the certification of their new Airbus aircraft with the FAA so they decided to wait until they could start all the markets together, Lynah said.
The LAX service was also expected to connect Savannah flyers to Providence, R.I. and Norfolk, Va., but those airports will also not be getting the service until February. In addition, Breeze has delayed the implementation of service from Savannah to Westchester, N.Y. and New Orleans from September to October.
“They’ve done pretty much a hard reset, trying to get the routes they have flying now covered, and slowing all new starts until they get a handle on the aircraft certifications,” Lynah said.
Breeze is still currently flying from Savannah to Columbus, Ohio and Hartford, Conn.
The service to Los Angeles is a key accomplishment for SAV and the region since it is Savannah and Hilton Head’s number one unserved market, according to a March press release announcing the LAX service.
The postponement comes after about $25,000 was spent on marketing efforts concerning the L.A. service, according to airport officials who discussed the issue during Wednesday’s Savannah Airport Commission meeting.
