Chatham County Honors Community Leader with Park Renaming

Nov. 6, 2025 – The Chatham County Board of Commissioners held a ceremony on Wednesday to unveil the sign for the newly renamed Bertha Mae Cummings Neighborhood Park in Savannah.

The event celebrated the leadership of Lamarville resident Bertha Mae Cummings, affectionately known as “Ms. Bert.” Cummings played a pivotal role in shaping the neighborhood, often serving as its unofficial park manager. She was instrumental in securing playground and sports equipment, organizing youth programs, and creating a safe, welcoming space for local families.

Her legacy in the Lamarville neighborhood was on full display Wednesday. Lamarville packed the pavilion at the park as County staff set up the sign unveiling.

Her community leadership extended beyond the park. Cummings established the Lamarville Neighborhood Watch and fostered collaboration among residents to strengthen neighborhood connections.

In recognition of her decades of service, the Board of Commissioners approved the renaming of the park to Bertha Mae Cummings Neighborhood Park on July 18, 2025. Wednesday’s unveiling marked the formal dedication of the park in her honor.
