July 17, 2025 – Deep Center is now accepting applications for adult mentors for the Young Author Project, an introductory writing program for middle school students. Local writers serve as a vital part of the Young Author Project, helping to engage students with language and their stories to encourage their growth as learners, celebrate their lives and communities, and express themselves with skill, confidence, and courage.
Workshops are held on-site at area middle schools, and prospective mentors need to be available for afterschool sessions consistently at least one day per week. Each workshop is facilitated by two mentor Writing Fellows: local artists, writers, and creatives who undertake a semester-long commitment (12 weeks) to lead one or more sessions per week. Writing Fellows are unpaid community volunteers, however a limited number of paid positions are available for mentors able to commit to leading multiple workshops.
Mandatory training for our Writing Fellows will be held Friday, August 29th and Saturday, August 30th. Programming for the Fall Semester begins Monday, September 15th.
“Youth need to be listened to,” Writing Fellow Jozlynn Carson said. “The Young Author Project gives the community a chance to hear the youth, and there’s so much to be heard from them.” Savannah needs the Young Author Project, and the Young Author Project needs its Writing Fellows. If spending a semester with some of the most creative young people in the South sounds like a good fit for you, apply! We would love to have you on our team.
