“Deep Center’s Spring Showcase event is a time for us to bring together youth, their families, and our larger community to celebrate the accomplishments of young artists from across Savannah,” says Executive Director, Dr. Holly Whitfield. “We’ll be hearing from writers, poets, and musicians who have challenged themselves to grow in their creative expression and are ready to step into the spotlight.”

The Deep Center runs the Young Author Project in 13 of Savannah’s public middle and high schools. All participants take part in a rigorous series of after-school writing workshops throughout the semester. Workshops are taught by volunteer Writing Fellows, who are themselves dedicated creative writers. Deep Center’s Block by Block program invites high school students to discover the complexity of Savannah’s past, while simultaneously developing their own creative voice through writing, visual arts, cultural experiences, and exploration of their community. The SLAM team takes creative writing to the stage with dynamic spoken word compositions that are performed locally and nationally.

“The youth in Deep’s programs are powerful storytellers and changemakers. This showcase is a celebration of their voices, their leadership, and their creativity,”  says Director of Youth Programs, Kalima Harris. “We are inspired by their courage and support them in fully engaging with this process of self-discovery. We look forward to being in community with our village, as we uplift our youth and affirm to them that they are heard, seen, supported, and loved. ”
