(January 23, 2024) – Deep Center is now recruiting writings fellows for the Young Author Project, Deep’s introductory program, that engages public middle and high school students with language and their stories to help them grow as learners, celebrate their lives and communities, and express themselves with skill, confidence, and courage. The deadline to apply is Friday, January 26th, at 5pm. Youth are selected by a teacher at their school based on demonstrated need, enthusiasm, and dedication and work with two writing fellows in their classroom. Each workshop is facilitated by two Writing Fellows: local artists, writers, and mentors who undertake a semester-long commitment (12 weeks) to lead one session per week at one of the 14 middle or high schools where The Young Author Project is located.

“ YAP workshops can be life changing—and not just for the young people ” says current writing fellow, Cai Macler. “I don’t think anything else in my career or life has felt quite the same. It was such a rush of happiness and joy. My favorite part of being at Deep is knowing this isn’t about me—this is about the young people. “

Writing fellows both past and present have spoken about the “why” behind their commitment to the young people present in The Young Author Project. You can read more about that commitment here: http://tinyurl.com/4kbktnuw
