“Deep’s Winter Showcase is a time to celebrate the courage it takes for young people to step into their power as storytellers,” said Executive Director Holly Whitfield. “We know that when youth are excited about telling their stories, we’re also strengthening their literacy, confidence and sense of belonging. This showcase is our way to uplift their voices and share that brilliance with our larger community.”

The showcase will highlight the fall class of the Young Author Project, which includes students from 11 Savannah-Chatham County Public School System middle schools. The event marks the completion of Deep’s 11-week creative writing workshops and celebrates students’ growth as young authors. The program features performances from Deep Laureates—young writers elected by their peers to represent their schools and present original work on stage.

“Each Laureate has worked hard to earn this honor, and this event gives them the spotlight to perform and be celebrated by friends, family, Deep staff and community members,” said Kalima Harris, Deep’s director of youth programs. “As the adults who support our young people through this process, we are inspired by them and encourage them to fully embrace the journey of self-discovery. We look forward to being in community with our village as we uplift our youth and affirm that they are heard, seen, supported and loved.”

The Deep Speaks: Winter Showcase will take place Sunday, Dec. 14, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Front Porch Improv. Admission is free with registration.
