Demolition of the structures across from Forsyth Park’s southwest end will begin within the next week or two, according to Evans General Contractors Executive Vice President/COO Jeff Jepson, one of the partners behind the plan to construct an underground parking garage and office complex at the site.

The pending demolitions come after the Savannah City Council’s approval last month of an amended agreement with the development partnership, Forsyth Commons LLC, for the construction of the proposed 3-story, 430-space garage at the site.

However, the partners are still contesting an active lawsuit related to the three office buildings they intend to build over the garage, and it has not been determined whether the design for the structures will have to again be approved, Jepson said via email on Tuesday.

Two residents are continuing their attempt in court to stop the project from proceeding, with concerns about the buildings size and traffic issues they would generate. However, a judge ruled in a July court order that the demolition work could proceed while the issues surrounding the office buildings are litigated.
