Nov. 20, 2020 – Confined within a triangle-shaped parcel directly adjacent to an active railroad and one of Savannah’s busiest streets, the vacant 1920s-era gas station at 410 E. 37th St. presents a variety of challenges to anyone wanting to pump some life back into the historic structure.

The latest proposal being brought before the Historic Preservation Commission is to convert the 93-year-old brick building into a single-family home.

The proposed work includes enclosing the open-air front canopy with glass panels and constructing a 521-square-foot addition with a transparent connector to the historic building.

Staff is recommending that the owner reconsider enclosing the canopy and that the addition’s footprint be reduced so that it does not exceed the size of the original structure.

The plan will be considered by the Historic Preservation Commission at their meeting on Nov. 23.  A previous plan to renovate the structure for use as a restaurant was approved in 2018, but never came to fruition.

You can read more about the property in this post from January.
