Jan. 27, 2023 – The owner of the Jinx is seeking letters of support as plans move forward to open a new location for the popular Savannah bar and music venue following the downtown establishment’s closure in 2020.

On Tuesday, a call via the venue’s social media pages was issued by Jinx owner Susanne Warnekros for the help as preparations are made for the bar’s “long awaited resurrection.”

“We will be submitting our final plans to the city soon so we can break ground on our new sanctuary,” the post states.

Warnekros said Thursday that the posts were getting lots of “likes” but she needed more actual letters, which she asked be sent via email to tj2602w@icloud.com. Hand written letters can also be addressed to “The Jinx” and sent to her shop Conjüre at 35 Montgomery St. 31401, she said.

In her posts, Warnekros suggested supporters write about how much they have missed the music venue and what they are looking forward to at the new location. Supporters who live in the neighborhood were encouraged to mention they lived nearby.

The call for support comes after plans were submitted to open the new location at 43rd and Whitaker streets where a vacant one-story building is currently located.

Proposed improvements and alterations to the building in the city’s Streetcar Historic District were approved by the Historic Preservation Commission in November, with the condition that the architect work with staff to make some recommended design changes. The plans prepared by Savannah-based Rose Architects included the interior build-out of a stage and performance space, two bars and kitchen for short-order food service.

Architect Kevin Rose said Thursday that he has made the changes that the HPC requested and the next step is to get approval for a special-use permit required for alcohol sales.

Most of the work that will be seen from the public right will be the roof redesign of the building to allow for more ceiling height in the main event space, according to the project description.  The plans also include the reconstruction of a small portion of the east side of the building due to its poor condition.

Hosting a variety of genre-spanning musical acts, including rock, metal, country and hip hop, the original Jinx entertained music fans for 17 years before closing its doors at 127 West Congress St. in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. In July, Warnekros announced on the Jinx’s Instagram account that she had signed a lease to reopen the venue.

“We just want to take a moment to thank all that have supported us for almost two decades and we are going to get hard to work on designing our new music church,” Warnekros said. “We cannot wait to host you all there and make even more legendary memories together as a community.”

The music venue would not be the first in the area branded as the Starland District. The Victory North event venue is located catty-corner from the site across Whitaker Street. The outdoor Starland Yard food truck park one block north also regularly features live music performances.
