There is a lot of garbage on social media. This column features some of the cool (and local) stuff.

July 13, 2025 – This edition of Off the Wall highlights Tybee Island sea turtle hatchings, a new mellow album from one of Graveface Records’ bands, artwork by self-taught painter Celeste M. Provence, and The Grey restaurant’s expansion to Paris with L’Arrêt.

Tybee Sea Turtle hatchings

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center announced the hatching on July 6 of a sea turtle nest after 56 days of incubating. The nest contained 81 hatched eggs, 32 unhatched eggs, 2 deceased hatchlings, and 1 survivor (called stragglers!), according to the Facebook post. The straggler was released on site to start their long life in the ocean.

New Graveface Records release

Savannah’s Graveface Records recently released Sun Lies Heavy by Chalk Talk, a mellow album I found to be perfect listening as I wrote and watched the rain.

Sun Lies Heavy by Chalk Talk

Chalk Talk’s bio describes them as an all-female indie rock band based in Los Angeles and New York City, with Nina Tartibi (vocals, guitar), Katie Pruden (vocals, bass), Fia Rose (drums), and Stella Singer (keyboard). The members met in high school in San Diego and have been making music and touring for the past five years. Drawing inspiration from other women in music, and exploring themes such as nostalgia, embarrassment, and confusion, Chalk Talk creates “their own unique sound through lyrics and music that work to compliment and contrast each other with their sonic storytelling.”

Here is a video of the band performing a cover of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game at Savannah’s Lodge of Sorrows in March 2024.

Artist Celeste M. Provence

Celeste M. Provence recently posted this painting she did of a cargo ship on the Savannah River, which she apparently has already sold, according to the comments.

Cargo ship by Celeste M. Provence. 18” x 24” acrylic on canvas.

Provence is a self-taught artist and a native of Savannah, who works primarily in acrylic painting. Her love of painting began as a child raised near Isle of Hope on the Herb River. Savannah and the Lowcountry inspire much of her work. Her paintings include coastal birds/flora and fauna, local landmarks, and commissions . Recently retired, she is able to spend much more time at the easel pursuing her passion of painting.

Like her art? She said she does take commissions. You can find more of her work on her Facebook page.

The Grey in Paris

The folks behind Savannah’s The Grey, Johno Morisano and chef Mashama Bailey, are opening a L’Arrêt by The Grey on Tuesday in the 7th arrondissement of Paris.

Taking a slow approach, they will be serving some breakfast, lunch and an afternoon/early evening menu to start before branching into Saturday bunch and then dinner later in September, according to the restaurant’s recent Facebook post.

The new restaurant’s website says the name L’Arrêt is inspired by the Savannah location and refers to a bus stop that “evokes the central place of buses and lunch counters in the narratives that shaped the American South in the twentieth century, as well as many metropolises around the world where there is a strong Southern cultural influence.”
