Everyone calls it the old Sears building, but I’m not sure when it was a department store. It has been vacant ever since I moved here in 2001. I do know the parking lot was used for bike polo in 2011, thanks to a Facebook page devoted to the site. A film production was set up in the parking lot some years back. It looks like some photos of the building’s interior were shot at the time. I’m not sure what should be there, but I sure would like the building to be put to use. Aldin Lee proposed using it to house the city’s new cultural arts center. That didn’t happen. In 2017, Jason Combs reported in the Connect that he helped a would-be developer look into the building several years before and found out that the owner was very unmotivated to sell. Ownership of the Old Sears Building at 2 E. Henry St. was transferred in 2007 from Michael Sharkey at no cost to Old Sears Building LLC, the current owner. The registered agent for the corporation is Richomond Hill-based RAPIDAN, LLC. The registered agent for Rapidan is Michael Sharkey.
