Sept. 22, 20204 – A new restaurant may be opening on the south end of Forsyth Park in a 19th-century home on Park Avenue, between Whitaker and Bull streets.
This week the Metropolitan Planning Commission will consider a special use permit to allow retail sales of alcohol for on-premises consumption, along with package sales for off-premises consumption, in association with a proposed restaurant at 17 West Park Avenue. The request is made concurrently with a related request to establish restaurants as a permitted use in the TC-1 zoning district.
The petitioner, FWK Collective LLC, is represented by Farina Wong Kinglsey, a culinary instructor and Asian food writer, according to her website. Jamie Contreras is listed as the registered agent of the property owner, 17 West Park LLC, which is based at 224 Houston St., the address of the Present Hotel.
Constructed originally in 1887, the 3-story single-family is a contributing resource in the local Victorian Historic District, according to the MPC staff report. Staff is recommending that the commission approve the petitions after finding it is consistent with the neighboring context.
“It is located within a mixed-use, but increasingly nonresidential, area at the southern end of Forsyth Park between Whitaker and Bull Streets,” the staff report states. “Based on a cursory analysis of other structures fronting on Park Avenue, all other structures contain non-residential uses.”
The neighborhood association also supports the petition and intended use, according to a letter submitted by President Nancy Maia.
“Additionally, the petitioner presented their plans at last membership meeting on Tuesday, September 10, and were met with great enthusiasm by those in attendance,” Maia said. “Everyone agrees this will be a welcomed addition to our neighborhood.”
