Jan. 26, 2025 – The developer behind the planned Riverview development along President Street recently submitted a variance request for a 377-unit multifamily development on the 16-acre site across from Eastern Wharf development.

The applicant, Atlanta-based Oxford Properties, is seeking to increase the maximum allowable block length within the zoning district by 175 feet to allow for up to a 675-foot block. The 500-foot block length was intended to maintain the downtown grid, however; the subject property is not within the historic district and does not have an existing grid pattern to maintain, according to the application.  Additionally, the developer says in the application that the Eastern Wharf property across President Street, while not zoned D-C, has block lengths exceeding 500 feet, which is consistent with the current request

The variance request comes after the Savannah City Council’s approval in 2022 of a new Downtown Commercial zoning classification for the site, as previously reported. A previous plan for the site, submitted with the rezoning request, included smaller blocks and a potential grocery store.

SEDA to sell Home Depot Distribution Center

On Thursday, the Savannah Economic Development Authority gave staff approval to move forward in the process to sell the Home Depot Distribution Center at 125 Crossroads Parkway to Home Depot.

“The Home Depot has been a tenant and in a lease agreement with SEDA since 1995, according to a statement from SEDA President and CEO Trip Tollison. “This sale signals a significant, long-term commitment by The Home Depot to our region and the Georgia Ports Authority.  We are honored that they continue to have great confidence in the Savannah region.”

No other information concerning the pending sale was provided.

  1. The proposed ‘Super blocks’ promote and tether this development to a car centric environment. At a time when cars, whether gas, electric or hybrid, are significantly contributing to climate change. Yes the new near east development is not part of the Historic District but it should be still foster the same pedestrian friendly community that is one of the biggest values of downtown
