May 30, 2025 – After meeting behind closed doors during an executive session on May 9, the Chatham County Commission approved a resolution to execute closing documents necessary for the purchase of 4609 Ogeechee Road, according to the recently posted meeting minutes. The site includes a commercial building where a now-closed Badcock Home Furniture & More store was located.
The county is eyeing the two buildings on the property to use for an evidence room for the police department and superior court, in addition to a police training facility and potential new location for the non-emergency call center, according to information provided to Savannah Agenda in response to an open records request. In addition, the county will probably use some space, which is yet to be decided, to allow the county to terminate some leased space, while some space may be used in part during the Coleman Courthouse renovation project, according to the statement signed by County Attorney Jon Hart.
The Badcock store closed as year after the retail chain was acquired by Conn’s HomePlus, which had filed for bankruptcy, as reported by the Savannah Morning News.
Located in unincorporated Chatham, the 1.49 acre site’s 2024 appraised value is more than $1.5 million, according to the Chatham County Assessors Office. The property was most recently sold for more than $1.7 million in March 2022, according to property records.
