Feb. 1, 2025 – The Beach Institute African American Cultural Center in coordination with the Savannah Black Heritage Festival proudly presents Roots and Realities, a compelling new art exhibit that explores the resilience, culture, and overlooked histories of the Gullah Geechee people.
Featuring the works of celebrated artists Amiri Farris and Isaac McCaslin, this exhibit invites audiences to engage with stories of survival, heritage, and historical injustice through art.
Farris’s dynamic, colorful compositions capture the joy, traditions, and spiritual depth of Gullah Geechee life, while McCaslin’s monochromatic series, The Tragedy at Ebenezer Creek, offers a stark and moving portrayal of a devastating Civil War-era atrocity that shaped history.
Together, their works explore the ways ancestral memory transforms suffering into cultural strength.
Opening Reception & Artist Talk
The exhibit’s opening reception on Thursday, February 6, at 6 PM will feature a thought-provoking artist conversation with Farris and McCaslin, moderated by a special guest. This discussion will explore their creative processes, the history behind their works, and how art can serve as a medium for both mourning and celebration.

The event is free, but reservations are required due to limited space. Secure your spot now at https://bit.ly/RootsandRealities. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibit runs from February 1 – April 10, 2025 at the Beach Institute African American Cultural Center.
