April 3, 2024 – Building permits and plans were recently submitted for new restaurants in Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District (AKA the Starland District), downtown and next to the Oglethorpe Mall.

1718 Bull St.

Among the plans is the proposed renovation of the building at 1718 Bull St. for use as a small sandwich shop,” Servo’s Sandwich Bar”, according to a building permit application and plans submitted on March 29. The non-historic building in Thomas Square dates back to 1970 and previously housed Blue Door Coffee and Waffles.

Oglethorpe Mall

In addition, a Jim ‘N Nick’s BBQ Restaurant will be opening at an outparcel by the Oglethorpe Mall, according to building plans now being reviewed by the city. The chain’s menu items include barbecue “classics” such as pulled pork, beef brisket and spare ribs, along with hamburgers and “Karl’s Catfish Sandwich”, according to the website.

319 W. Broughton St.

The Baked Bear is coming to Savannah. The cookie and ice cream sandwich shop will be opening up at 319 W. Broughton St, according to a commercial building renovation permit issued on March 8. The  franchise lets customers mix and match cookie or brownie “top and bottoms” with a variety of ice cream flavors and toppings, according to the website.

9 West 43 St.

A new restaurant Cafe Colibri, will be opening in the historic building previously occupied by Troupial at 9 West 43rd St.

Constructed in 1920, the building in Thomas Square will be getting an addition to accommodate the new establishment, as recently approved by the Historic Preservation Commission. The cafe and gallery will be bringing a “timeless brunch experience” to Savannah, with a cozy atmosphere, delicious coffee creations and pastries, according to the website.

Meanwhile, Troupial’s owner, Majo Laprea, is sharing kitchen space with is currently sharing kitchen space and ovens at the Unforgettable Bakery alongside self-taught Haitian-American baker and business owner Belinda Baptiste, as reported by Lila Miller for The Savannahian.
