“A Haunting Read” By Eric Curl – Oct. 29, 2021
The Racial Equity and Leadership Task Force (REAL) presented their report to the Savannah City Council on Thursday. The presentation came after former Mayor Dr. Otis Johnson, REAL Savannah chair, led a group of 45 volunteer members representing the public and private sectors, local communities and stakeholders to develop the report. In partnership with the Georgia Systemic Change Alliance, Sapelo Foundation and Partnership for Southern Equity, REAL Savannah created “Seeing Savannah through a Racial Equity Lens” to detail its findings.
The mission of REAL is to advocate for racial equity in Savannah by identifying the systemic and structural barriers caused by racism that make it difficult for people of color to achieve their maximum potential. REAL used a racial equity lens approach to identify and analyze data on local racial disparities. The report of REAL’s findings was designed to encourage the city council and residents to support action to address the serious levels of racial inequities that exist in the community.
The mayor and alderman are scheduled to adopt the report on Nov. 9.
