Satire by Eric Curl

May 1, 2023 – As Tybee Island’s reputation as the “spring break capital of the universe” grows, city leaders are eyeing a relatively sleepy beach town further south to expand their visitor accommodations.

Daytona Beach has been added to the list of the properties Tybee plans to acquire, following the recent launch of eminent domain proceedings to obtain four acres of forest on the island’s north end.

While officials will not publicly disclose their reasoning for wanting to obtain any of the properties, the city has been bracing for an expected surge of visitors for the upcoming 16th Annual Tybee Turtle Trot 5k Beach Run, theater events and Beach Bum parade.

By acquiring the additional acreage, the city could relocate events Tybee is better known for, such as Orange Crush and the newly organized PeachFest, to coastal Florida so they could continue uninterrupted through May.

One Daytona official praised the idea, stating the little known community looked forward to benefiting from Tybee’s notoriety for attracting the younger, party-minded demographic.
