“Shades of St. Patrick’s Day” by Eric Curl – 02.27.2022
Many residents now say “uh uh” and hightail it out of town during Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day festival, due to the large crowds, noise and drunken behavior that has increasingly overshadowed the holiday and parade. Not all businesses benefit from the influx of visitors and some actually close their doors to avoid trying to operate during the mayhem. To improve the experiences of residents, businesses and visitors, the Savannah City Council approved some changes to the festival during their meeting on on Feb. 24.
The changes – which are expected to allow more local businesses to benefit from the event , while reducing the party-like atmosphere on the streets – include:
- An expanded to-go cup zone
- No outdoor beer sales stations
- No out-of-town motorcoach parking permits
- No live entertainment on public right-of-way
