Nov. 27, 2025 – Chatham County Chairman Chester Ellis is counting on Santa Claus to provide a new public transit agency, although county commissioners say they were unaware of his outreach to the North Pole.
While standing next to Ellis at a recent press conference, the commissioners said they had no idea Ellis was sending the letter to Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick.
The North Pole’s assistance would prove valuable as Ellis takes steps to end the county’s contract with Chatham Area Transit and, if it comes to it, replace CAT with a county run parallel service. Santa’s magic could really come in handy in providing vehicles, facilities and bus operators necessary for such an operation.
County Appointments to CAT Board Still Vacant (Press Release)
While the chairman insisted there had been consensus among the commission to reach out to Kris Kringle, the commissioners denied approving the correspondence.
“I don’t even believe in Santa Clause,” said one commissioner.
The commissioners were also reportedly caught off guard by the chairman’s decision to replace turkey with ham for Thanksgiving this year.
Meanwhile, the CAT board worked on its own wish list at a special called meeting on Monday.
The board is also planning on reaching out to Santa, his elves and state legislators to support capital projects, including new buses and a paratransit vehicle maintenance facility. The projects are now in “jeopardy” after the county rejected CAT’s request to include SPLOST funding in the latest referendum that would typically be used as a local match for grants for such projects, according to the letter.
“Ol’ Scrooge has struck again,” one commissioner claimed
