After years of meetings, workshops, and studies, the city of Savannah is ready for the public to determine what they would like to happen to the Civic Center … again. The city announced Tuesday that a series of engagements sessions will be held throughout the community to determine the future use of the site. The mayor and council members will then determine what to do with the Civic Center again, according to officials.

The debate over what to do with the Civic Center is believed to go back to Savannah’s founding. when colonists were torn between tearing the whole building down, retaining the whole structure or just preserving the Johnny Mercer Theater, (the famous singer was eventually named for the building). Meanwhile General James Oglethorpe thought that retaining the structure would get in the way of a town plan he had in mind.

“After centuries of deliberation, it is time to make a decision, about making a decision,” one city official said. “I’m sure the community input will be unanimous, the city council’s ultimate decision will be accepted by all and there will be no need to waffle on the plan going forward.”

The building’s fate is expected to be determined in time for the next city council to reconsider and host their own public engagement sessions.
