Nov. 19, 2025 – Horse carriage tour companies are expected to take over for Chatham Area Transit in providing public transportation for residents as Chatham County takes steps to cancel an agreement to fund services for the transit agency.

The move is considered by county officials as a “win-win” since the tour companies are facing financial challenges of their own ahead of the city’s pending implementation of tighter restrictions on operations in the summer.

In addition, the retired buses can be repurposed as housing, advocates say.
