Satire by Eric Curl

April 16, 2023 – City officials were stunned by the recent discovery that Broughton Street extends beyond Drayton Street after recently celebrating what they thought was the end of a $13-million improvement project along the corridor.

The additional nine blocks were revealed following the removal of construction fencing that had been blocking the roadway as part of the 100-year project.

An exploratory committee has since found the section of the street to have a different aesthetic than the recently revamped west end. Instead of paver-lined sidewalks, decorative tree grates, newly planted palms and a brick-embedded street, visitors will find empty newspaper machines, street-art covered kiosks, functioning fire hydrants and distressed asphalt. One big surprise was the vacant former city municipal street building and its padlock and chain adorned doors. The empty building standing tall at Abercorn will no doubt give the new inlaid compass rose at Bull Street some competition when it comes to determining Broughton’s most distinctive landmark.

Impressed, city officials say they may leave the east end untouched, rather than ruin its traditional appearance by trying to mimic the look of the west end.
