Dec. 18, 2024 – City Manager Jay Melder recently updated the Savannah City Council on the Civic Center plan, which includes bulldozing the Martin Luther King Jr. Arena and giving the Johnny Mercer Theatre a facelift.

The Tuesday night memo states that the plan is supported by a $1.2 million allocation proposed as “close-out” entry within the current year revised budget. The funding is to go towards site planning, design, equity and public engagement. Architectural design work is to include a temporary facade, like taking a deep breath and putting on a smile before greeting family over the holidays.

The city council approved the latest Civic Center plan at their June 27 meeting.
