Savannah is full of people who work remotely and students, so finding the perfect setting is ideal for productivity.
Even if you are not in these 2 demographics, finding a nice place to sit and read a book or journal for an hour is always nice.
Sometimes, you simply want to settle into a lovely space and work for a bit, away from home. The beauty of this is eliminating distractions typically found at home to have some focused work time.
There is no shortage of coffee shops in Savannah. However, finding the right one to sit for more than a few minutes to do some homework, work remotely, or even to just leisurely relax for an hour with a nice book can sometimes be tricky.
Some of the best ones are close to college housing, college class buildings, or in strategic touristic routes, which makes them BUSY all the time!
For example, Gallery Espresso is always full of visitors because of its Bull Street location directly across from Chippewa Square.
Origin Coffee Bar is located directly across from college housing and ALWAYS packed full of students: You can barely ever find a table there.
One time, I was sitting with my husband having lunch at Origin, and a couple just came and sat at our table casually saying, “Can we sit here too?”. Without even waiting a microsecond for a reply, they sat down and then completely ignored us while having their own animated conversation.
Bold.
It was kind of funny; we didn’t care since we were almost done anyway. But they serve food on proper plates there (not just grab and go pastries), so I could understand the urgent need for a table to enjoy the food you just ordered!
No hate to the success of these coffee spots; all that business is great for them! But sometimes it can get a bit frustrating if you want to go there and find a place to work.
This article explores spots with lots of space and not as much traffic. Let’s give them some well-deserved love.
NOTE: This article took some time to write because I had to visit the spaces, explore the quality of offerings, and see how busy it gets at different times of the day! What’s the point of going there with your computer or books if you can’t find a spot, right?
Additionally, this article features some amazing hidden gems, so don’t be shy and leave me a comment with your favorite one.
Sweet Patricia’s
This little Italian bakery and cafe is located at the intersection of Habersham Street and 34th Street. It is locally owned, beautifully decorated, and has one of the best quiches in the city. Seriously, this quiche is $8 a piece and it is enough to feed two.
Generously portioned, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Ask them to warm it up for you.
I HIGHLY recommend their sandwiches, which cost up to $15 and are BIG and come with a chickpea salad or a side of chips. A great deal. I get so irked by places that charge $15 or more for a ridiculous-looking sandwich with no sides. I get that inflation is a thing, but that’s absurd.
This place has lots of available seating often and a super friendly staff. A whole display of locally baked goods too!
Savannah Coffee Roasters
This coffee shop is amazing for a few reasons: This family has been roasting their coffee since 1909, so this is O.G. Savannah coffee.
Their coffee shop has TONS of seating, and I mean tons: Outside seating on Liberty Street, an indoor lounge area, an indoor table area around the central Roasting Room, and a less frequented upstairs area with additional cozy couches and tables.
Honestly, if you can’t find a spot here, I would be shocked.
They also have one of the best tiramisus in the city. Give it a try; it is unreal.
Things to note: This shop is located on Liberty Street, so it is often filled with visitors. But there are plenty of spaces and tons of seating, so finding a place is never too difficult.
Go upstairs for a quieter vibe.
COFFEE•DELI
Coffee Deli is in Habersham Village. I used to go to this coffee shop often when the now “Hub” next door was solely a hot yoga center.
It always felt like a cafeteria in there, with grey tones and metallic chairs and tables scattered, so staying too long never seemed appealing.
They redesigned the whole space, and it is warm and beautiful. The yellow booths are lovely and comfy to sit and work. I often see students and remote workers settling in for a bit.
Why we love it: Their walls are adorned with local artwork for sale. The food here is so good! They have SO many different styles of delicious chicken salad that you can get in a croissant or on different breads. They have a fresh pastry display and a full coffee bar with plenty of drink options, including specialty drinks like a Lavender mocha frappe.
This is a fantastic spot for lunch or just a drink.
Things to note: This spot gets BUSY in the morning since it is located in Habersham Village.
My advice: get there early or at off-hours (after the lunch rush) to secure a booth if you like.
The middle tables are often open. I’ve never gone there and not been able to find a table, just not my favorite table (booth!). Another thing to note is that they close early: 5 pm Monday through Friday and 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.
The staff is super nice, so don’t be a jerk and come 30 minutes before closing and stay for an hour. A lot of people do this not realizing how early they close!
I was once an accidental jerk by overstaying a bit. An accidental jerk is still a jerk, though!
Live and learn.
Superbloom
Superbloom started as a coffee shop mixed with a local artist’s shop. They would feature unique health lattes and lots of local art! From art prints to jewelry and pottery. If you want to buy local and support local artists, this is the spot.
This is a great place to buy souvenirs or gifts for special occasions! Many of them are one of a kind! One of the owners, Lara Neece, is a printmaker and a wide display of her beautifully printed T-shirts is always on display.
Back to the homework and remote work part of the article: Superbloom has 2 rooms; both used to be shop displays, but now they have a dedicated cafe room.
The amazing thing is how they expanded their menu and remodeled their cafe space. It is gorgeous.
Most importantly, De Soto Avenue is quiet during the early day, contrasting with the active nightlife scene on the same street as Two Tides, Smol Bar, and Starland Yard. So, this place is a hidden gem to come and work or relax.
Why we love it: This is a 100% female-owned and operated local business. The space is beautiful, and the location is quiet. There are lots of tables and it is never packed.
They offer Watercolor Wine Wednesdays: They provide a complimentary watercolor kit and you can indulge in a glass of wine or some of their other offerings and paint! I recommend getting one of their Rosés to alleviate the summer heat!
Agatha’s Coffee and Tea House
Agatha’s is a magical-looking coffee shop: It feels like what I imagine a tearoom in Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley would look like. Dark, enchanting, and beautifully decorated.
The romance and nostalgia that they have accomplished with their decor and atmosphere is amazing. It looks like a beautiful place that has been frozen in time.
There are a few seating options inside, but if you can’t get a table, there’s plenty of outside seating as well.
Their crafted tea latte selection is plentiful, and their menu offerings are delicious. I highly recommend a visit.
Things to note: I love this space; it is without a doubt one of the most beautiful coffee shops in the city. But in my experience, get there early for their lunch offerings, since they sometimes run out quick!
Shuk Mediterranean
Shuk is not a coffee shop per se, but it is a beautiful space to get a bite or simply have a nice coffee and settle in to work.
And they have LOTS of space. I’ve never been unable to find a table.
With Mediterranean-inspired offerings and a full coffee menu, it is a great place to spend an hour or two.
Soothing pastel colors and relaxed vibes make this space ideal for work or play.
Why we love it: This spot opened a bit over a year ago and they have gained a following with their cuisine, live music offerings on Thursdays, and happy hour specials.
In addition, it is located in the historic district, but away from the hustle and bustle of downtown restaurants and cafes.
