Savannah Agenda in Asheville again
I just got back from Asheville. While there for a show, I could not resist checking out the Asheville City Council’s most recent meeting agenda. What I found was a potential tool for addressing Savannah’s affordable housing crisis.
Maybe it was the lack of chrome covered dinosaur skeletons and sparkling geodes, but the River Street East project never quite got the attention Richard Kessler’s Plant Riverside on the western side of the Savannah Riverwalk did. Now, 10 years after the 4-acre, 4-hotel development was first introduced, the plan to transform River Street’s eastern end is sure to spark some discussion.
Savannah Illustrated: Juneteenth in Savannah
While Juneteenth is worth celebration, it is important to prevent one form of bondage from being replaced with another. The Racial Equity and Leadership Task Force (REAL) presented their report to the Savannah City Council about eight months ago. Among the findings in the report “Seeing Savannah through a Racial equity Lens” was the disproportionate percentage of black males within the jail and prison system. The report of REAL’s findings was designed to encourage the city council and residents to support action to address the serious levels of racial inequities that exist in the community.
The mayor and aldermen adopted the report on Nov. 9. Sometimes studies like these get put on the shelf. Let this post serve as a dust cover.
