April 28, 2022 update – The HPC approved the renovations and addition.

April 23, 2022  – After recently facing demolition, the small, art covered building along downtown Savannah’s Bull Street corridor may instead be renovated and expanded under a proposal going before the Historic Preservation Commission during Wednesday’s meeting.

Located on the corner of Bull Street and 32nd Street next to Bull Street Taco, the non-historic structure was last used as a car wash but has been vacant and boarded up for a few years.

This image taken from Google Maps Street View shows 1602 Bull St. in 2012, when the site was used as a car wash.

The proposal seeks to add a new rear addition to the one-story building, which is currently only 194 square feet in size, while developing outdoor seating area between the building and the sidewalk.

HPC Staff finds the overall scale of the new structure to be visually compatible with the surrounding buildings, but is recommending the proposal be continued to the May 25 meeting in order for the petitioner to address some issues related to proposed materials, setback requirements and other building specifications.

The new plan comes about 2.5 years after the property’s owner, Vantosh Realty, received approval in Nov. 2019 to demolish the building (described as a shed at the time), but never moved forward with that plan.
