Oct. 15, 2023 –Abe’s on Lincoln is alive and well, after being shut down by a hotel construction project to its immediate west.
On early Saturday evening, the downtown pub was full of patrons drinking beer, shots and alcoholic seltzers below hundreds of white napkins adorned with drawings of the former president.
The bar reopened on Thursday, three weeks after the 19th-century building was damaged by construction for a 154-room Tempo branded hotel being built next door.
Owner Brian Huskey said they discovered the structural damage late last month because it prevented the bar’s bathroom door from closing. The structural damage has since been repaired.
“I guess the good news is were getting restroom out of the deal,” Huskey said.
The reopening comes about three weeks after construction work related to providing the electricity needs of the new hotel damaged the adjacent 3-story historic building, as previously reported.
The installation of an in-ground electrical vault by Georgia Power at the northeast corner of the mid-19th-century building at 226 E. Bryan St. resulted in some “significant settling and cracking” in the street level masonry wall, according to correspondence submitted Sept. 22 with building permit documents.
Georgia Power did not respond to requests for comment.
The correspondence from JDR Construction & Design’s John Roberts said his company was issued an “emergency repair” permit for the foundation work after contacting the city about the incident.
Roberts did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Noble Investment Group purchased the property in April 2022, as part of the hotel development. The company did not respond to a request for comment.
