OGEECHEE RIVERKEEPER FILES APPEAL ON WELL PERMITS

EPD did not consider the ‘unreasonable adverse effects,’ appeal contends

Submitted by Ogeechee Riverkeeper

Nov. 6, 2024 – Ogeechee Riverkeeper (ORK) has filed an administrative appeal to Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) regarding groundwater withdrawal permits for Bryan and Bulloch Counties, intended to supply the Hyundai Megasite and other users. ORK asserts that the EPD’s conclusions regarding these permits are incorrect, particularly regarding the impact on the Floridan Aquifer, the effectiveness of protective measures, and consideration of ‘unreasonable adverse effects.’ The appeal will require an administrative hearing.

The appeal maintains ORK’s position that Floridan aquifer groundwater should be used for people, animals, and crops – not industry. It is not in the public interest to prioritize large scale industry over living beings, yet in early 2025, public utilities in the area will have to reduce their withdrawal of pristine groundwater water for drinking and human use. Even with this deadline on the horizon, EPD is approving a permit for massive industrial withdrawals. This groundwater is too precious to be used for industrial processes.

Tharros Place to Host “Cocktails for Courage” Fundraiser

Submitted by Tharros Place

WHAT: Tharros Place, a nonprofit that provides residential services for survivors of human trafficking, will host a “Cocktails for Courage” Fundraiser to raise money for its residential facility opened in fall 2023. The facility is open 24/7 and staffed by trained and licensed professionals providing trauma-informed, client-centered care to girls ages 12 to 17. Media are invited to attend and conduct interviews with the Tharros Place Executive Director.

WHERE: Cohen’s Retreat. 5715 Skidaway Road, Savannah, GA 31406

WHEN: Friday, January 26, 2024 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

MORE INFO: Tickets are $75 and include two drink tickets and hors d’oeuvres. There will also be live music and a silent auction. To purchase tickets, visit tharrosplace.com

Last year in Georgia, 494 minors with an average age of 14 were identified as victims of human trafficking. Chatham County ranks fourth in the state for the number of sex trafficking cases of minors. Tharros Place’s ultimate goal is to transform those girls from victims to young women brimming with confidence, self-respect, and courage.

The issue is of particular concern for Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp, who created the Georgians for Refuge, Action, Compassion, and Education (GRACE) Commission to eliminate human trafficking as a threat to people in every corner of Georgia.

ABOUT THARROS PLACE:

Human trafficking – the exploitation of another person for sex, labor, or services – is a global threat. In the United States, there are 1.5 million human trafficking victims, most of whom are children. Savannah is no exception, due to its high poverty rate, international port, booming tourism industry, and the crossroads of Highway 95 and I-16.

Tharros Place, a 501(c)(3) that takes its name from the Greek word for courage, was created to fill a gap in services. In 2023, Tharros Place opened a 12-bed residential home to address underlying trauma and cultivate a culture of courage for girls ages 12 to 17.

Family Promise calling for volunteers for ‘MLK Day of Service’

Submitted by Family Promise of the Coastal Empire

In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a National Day of Service. Each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service stands as the only federal holiday observed as a National Day of Service – a “day on, not a day off.”

At Family Promise, we are founded on the principles of community and service, dedicated to supporting families in need. As we approach this year’s MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15th, we invite you, your church, civic groups, and offices to join us in making a meaningful impact.

This National Day of Service, we’re calling on volunteers to help brighten, ‘spruce up,’ and enhance our spaces to create a better environment for our guests. There are numerous volunteer opportunities available, and we would be honored to have your assistance.

Please click the link below to explore the volunteer opportunities in each county and find out how you can contribute to our cause. Your support on this day would mean a lot to us, and we encourage you to sign up for a fulfilling experience.

The 2024 Faculty Explorations schedule is as follows:

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17 – 7-8 p.m. – Jenkins Hall Music Room

David Elliott, the Music Director and Jazz Band Instructor at Savannah Country Day School and an experienced trombone player who has shared the stage with top artists ranging from The Police drummer Stewart Copeland to jazz legend Wynton Marsalis, will explore the way music affects the brain and why more of the brain is involved in playing a musical instrument than any other activity. Participants will experience the power of music by playing a song using simple, hands-on instruments. No experience is necessary. Musicians are welcome.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24 – 7-8:30 p.m. – Pape Hall Room 207

Neil Gabbey – “’I-amb’ Shakespeare”

Savannah Country Day School Middle School English Teacher Neil Gabbey will discuss the power of iambic pentameter, a rhythmic convention popularized by British playwright and poet William Shakespeare. Santander will explore why Plato and Bernays share a concern about the potentially violent consequences of a democracy that devolves into mob rule and why “propaganda” tends to be thought of as malicious while “persuasion” is often considered to be enlightened.

WEDNESDAY, February 7 – 7-8:30 p.m. – Mingledorff Hall Room 212

Meg Haston, LPC – “The Stories We Tell”

Savannah Country Day School Assistant Head of Upper School for Student Life Meg Haston — who is also a licensed therapist and the author of four novels for young adults — will discuss the ways that the stories we tell ourselves have a profound impact on our emotional experience, our response to others and our understanding of self. An Opportunity to Simply Be: Drop-In

Submitted by Deep Center

Deep formed Drop-In back in 2018 after noticing an important trend: too often, the young people who most needed Deep’s programming could not access it as a result of transportation limitations. Without adults free to give rides, and in a city with often unreliable public transportation, youth could only attend programming hosted in their own neighborhoods. Accessibility became doubly complicated—though doubly important—for systems-involved youth. With these constraints in mind, Deep dreamed up a series of self-contained creative sessions hosted in community centers, churches, nonprofit centers, and other locations centrally located in neighborhoods where arts-based programming could create lifelines for young people in need of a place to explore, dream, and have some fun. Read more>

Saturday, Nov. 4

9 am-2 pm

Georgia Southern University, Armstrong Campus

What is and Why an “UNconference”

An “unconference” is a participant-driven conference model. Unconferences prioritize participant voices (in this case local educators) as leaders and decision-makers, in contrast to traditional conferences that often feature researchers, academics, or experts that are unfamiliar with the specific challenges and strengths of a local context.  The spirit of an Unconference reflects our Deep Center approach to learning and community. Our Unconference will feature opportunities for participants to be playful, creative, and reflective, and serve as a platform to elevate participants’ visions for  how teaching and learning could look like in Savannah-Chatham County and the surrounding areas.

We are excited to announce that the unconference will feature a Keynote session with Omkari Williams, Author of forthcoming Micro Activism: How You Can Make a Difference in the World (Without a Bullhorn). Omkari Williams has worked as a political consultant and life coach for 30 years, with an emphasis on supporting activists who identify as introverted or highly sensitive. As a queer Black woman, she shares her own story of challenging injustice to empower others in making a difference in their communities. She can be found at https://www.omkariwilliams.com/
