Jan. 5, 2023 – The new owner of most of the buildings that make up downtown’s City Market has unveiled its building plans for the new restaurant and bar that is replacing Wild Wing Cafe.
Green Room Partners recently submitted plans for alterations and additions to the historic building at 27 Barnard St. to accommodate Wexford’s Irish Pub.
The plans going before the Historic District Board of Review on Wednesday include the construction of a new outdoor deck, the replacement of non-historic wood and glass doors, and the addition of wooden box planters on the sills of the second-floor windows.
Staff is recommending that consideration of the alterations be continued so the petitioner can make some recommended design changes and provide some additional information about materials being used for the project.
About 40 businesses, including art studios, retail shops and restaurants, currently operate at City Market near Ellis Square.
The renovation plans come almost a year since Charleston-based GRP purchased most of the City market properties for $30.5 million last March, according to sales records.
Robert Tulloch, a managing partner with GRM, told Savannah Agenda in December that while GRP plans to launch a rebranding campaign, no major “upset the apple cart” changes are planned for the buildings or tenant mix.
A week later, Tulloch told WTOC of GRP’s plans to make City Market more family friendly by eventually closing all the businesses at midnight, and getting rid of bar-only establishments after their leases expirer. GRP also began putting up fencing on weekend nights from midnight to 4 a.m., which closes off access to the courtyard and businesses aside from three bars open past midnight, as reported by WJCL.
