April 24, 2022 – The Chatham County Board of Assessors deserves kudos for recently making their full meeting agenda packets easily accessible online.
The agenda packets, which the board started posting earlier this month, include detailed information about what the board will be voting on, whereas the agenda just lists the general item to be considered without getting into any specifics. While most information in the packets is considered public information and therefore available by law if requested, all that is required by law as far as posting is concerned is publication of the basic agenda. Taking the extra step to help keep the public informed should be applauded. The organization joins other public entities that provide full packets, such as Chatham County Commission, the Savannah City Council and Chatham Area Transit.
The Board of Assessors’ next meeting is on Thursday. An example of what you can learn in this week’s packet is the property owners who are requesting certain tax exemptions. Without the packet, the public would only know that exemptions are being considered. In addition, the public can learn about the board’s budget plans and the county’s tax digest status if they are so inclined.
Hopefully, more local organizations that have yet to do so will be inspired by the move to also take the step and “post the packet.”
