Sept. 10, 2020 – The Savannah College of Art and Design purchased 612 Drayton Street on Sept. 3 for $2.7 million, according to the sales record.
Located downtown across the street from Forsyth Park, the four-story building dates back to 1872, according to this historic building map compiled by the Metropolitan Planning Commission.
The vacant building was previously owned by Commonwealth Construction, which purchased the property from the Georgia Medical Society for $600,000 in 2017 with plans to open a deli at the location, according to the property record. Commonwealth’s renovation plans were approved by the Savannah Historic District Board of Review at a meeting on April 10, 2019, but the deli plan never came to fruition.
The building is located in the middle of three other SCAD properties along Drayton, including Ruskin Hall about one block north, which is located in the historic Candler Hospital building that dates back to 1819. After purchasing the structure from the Savannah Law School in 2018, the building now houses the SCAD Admission Welcome Center, the office for career and alumni success, and the university’s in-house design studio, according to the university’s website.
SCAD’s Clinard Hall and Lai Wa Hall are located directly to the south.
