Oct. 7, 2026 – The much-debated question over whether to allow dogs on the beach probably won’t be answered anytime soon. In the meantime, the city of Tybee Island is trying to accommodate our four-legged friends as best as they can.
With that in mind, the city is seeking bids to install fencing for two new dog parks at the planned Solomon Park, a roughly 4-acre property at Polk Street and Solomon Avenue that the city is developing as a passive community park. The new dog park would replace the two existing dog parks on the north end of the island with two larger, shaded dog parks along Polk Street on the eastern edge of the property.
Solomon Park is expected to include walking and biking trails, marsh overlooks and pollinator gardens, according to city officials. The city closed on the property on in June 2024, paying $2.4 million for the tract, as previously reported.
The solicitation came about the same time Tybee Mayor Brian West argued the pros and cons of allowing dogs on the beach in a recent newsletter. In the end, West didn’t take a position one way or the other, which is probably wise. It’s the third rail, or considering how to save Social Security. There is no right answer if you’re trying to get reelected.
