The Historic Preservation Commission will consider on Wednesday the city’s petition to demolish a fire damaged historic home 604 West 39th St that poses a threat to public safety.

The 2-story building was constructed in 1910 and is a contributing resource within the Cuyler-Brownville Historic District, according to the staff report.

Staff is recommending that the building be deconstructed, and the materials salvaged for reuse, rather than traditional demolition, with the understanding of the limits presented by the fire damage and safety issues, according to the application packet.

The building’s owner is deceased, and the recorder’s court judge signed the demolition order in November 2024 due to the extensive damage the June 2024 fire caused and resulting safety issues. The city is permitted to place liens against the property to recover the costs of the demolition and cleaning of the site.
