Week in review

The MPC approved a petition to amend the Future Land Use map from Parks and Recreation to Planned Development for the former fairgrounds site owned by the city. The city sought the recommendation as part of a plan to have a contracted buyer to develop the parcel as a mixed-used development with affordable housing, film studios, a creative workforce innovation center, neighborhood commercial uses, an indoor sports facility, outdoor sports fields and courts, playgrounds and a nature preserve.

The MPC also approved amending the Future Land Use map and zoning from Traditional Neighborhood to Traditional Commercial for 1201 Abercorn St., along with a special-use permit to sell alcohol, in an effort to adaptively reuse the existing historic church on the parcel as a restaurant.

After calling the church home since 1927, the congregation’s decision to sell the building was an extremely difficult and emotionally taxing one according to Pastor Precious Hawkins, as reported last week.
