“No gnats or mosquitoes and the sound was awesome!” Port Wentworth Vystar Pavilion’s debut earns accolades from concert goers
Aug. 10, 2026 – Port Wentworth’s new Vystar Pavilion introduced itself to residents and music lovers over the past two weekends, hosting a jazz concert on Aug. 1 and then country stars Billy Currington and Kip Moore this past Friday. The 5,200-seat covered amphitheater is earning praise from commenters on social media who attended the shows – with some reassuring one concerned citizen that, while a bit hot in the day, the sand gnats and mosquitoes stayed away and the sound delivered. The venue is part of the city’s Anchor Park, planned 150-acre sports and entertainment complex that city officials say will anchor future growth in the area. The pavilion is part of a $48 million public-private development that also includes the Savannah Ghost Pirates’ Ice Cove training facility, according to Port Wentworth’s 2024 financial report. The training rink is also expected to be completed this month, according to an update City Manager Steve Davis provided in April. In addition, the park will feature multi-use fields and courts for various sports, a farmers’ market and a recreational gym. The pavilion is managed by Oak View Group, which also operates Savannah’s Enmarket Arena, home of the Ghost Pirates minor league hockey team.
Port Wentworth extends detention facility moratorium as residents seek data center pause
The Port Wentworth City Council extended its moratorium on applications for correctional, detention and penal facilities through Oct. 31 as the city updates its ordinances and reviews infrastructure needs. The original moratorium was set to expire July 31, and officials said the extension will allow proposed regulations to move through the planning commission and two city council readings alongside updates concerning mobile homes. The unanimous vote on July 16 came after residents renewed calls for a separate moratorium on data centers, claiming that more than 500 residents had signed a petition and arguing that the city should pause new proposals while studying their long-term effects. City Manager Steve Davis noted that in December the city adopted a data center ordinance, which he said includes safeguards such as a 55-decibel noise limit measured 500 feet from a facility. The ordinance also restricts data centers to industrial districts and requires developers to document utility capacity, cooling plans and regional-impact review before site-plan approval. In addition, it establishes 300- to 500-foot residential setbacks, limits accessory office space and prohibits certain exterior building materials.

Port Wentworth approves Massa Center mixed-use redevelopment
Port Wentworth’s first project tied to its planned main street redevelopment initiative is moving forward after the City Council unanimously approved the concept site plan for the Massa Center on July 16. The project would renovate the vacant former China House restaurant at 205 S. Coastal Highway into a mixed-use development with a takeout restaurant, two retail or office spaces, four studio apartments and rooftop space planned for seating and a bar-and-grill area.

Port Wentworth extends moratorium on residential development, unveils budget
On June 18, the Port Wentworth City Council approved a six-month extension of its moratorium on rezoning property to residential classifications, with city officials citing continued rapid growth, available housing inventory and the need to ensure infrastructure and public services keep pace with development. City officials said Port Wentworth’s population grew by about 2,700 residents, more than 18%, over the past year. Port Wentworth officials also took the first step toward adopting a fiscal year 2027 budget, proposing no increase to the city’s property tax rate while adding public safety positions and funding major infrastructure projects to accommodate continued growth. Budget hearings are scheduled for June 25 before the council considers final adoption of the spending plan.

Port Wentworth adopts zoning rules for data centers
The Port Wentworth City Council approved an ordinance Dec. 18 establishing zoning regulations for data centers, limiting them to industrially zoned property and requiring measures including a 500-foot setback from residential districts, proof of adequate electricity and water capacity, and Development of Regional Impact review when applicable. City officials said the ordinance does not approve a particular project and argued that data centers could expand the tax base, strengthen the power grid and generate far less truck traffic than warehouses.
