Parker’s buys Savannah’s ‘Globe’

The fate of a quirky Savannah landmark is now in Parker’s hands, following the convenience store chain’s $4.7 million purchase last month of a recently vacated commercial area on the city’s southside.

The acquisition of the former 1950s-era gas storage tank, painted to resemble Earth, comes almost one year since Parker’s received approval to demolish the “globe” and surrounding buildings to redevelop the 3.43-acre site.

McQueen’s Island trail repairs continue

Fans of the waterfront path along the Savannah River will have to wait a bit longer before the can enjoy walking the McQueen’s Island Trail, which is undergoing extensive repairs due to damages caused by hurricanes and high tides.  

Chatham County’s latest timeline shifts the project’s expected completion date from the summer to the fall.

The latest developments concerning past stories

On July 22, the Savannah City Council approved the Metorpolitan Planning Commission’s recommendation to designate 90 Cuyler-Brownville properties as historic structures. The Kiah house is one of the properties getting the extra protections the local historic status provides. 

In addition, the council approved the rezoning request by Cabretta Capital as part of a plan to redevelop and rehabilitate the historic St. Paul’s Academy building at 315 West 38th St. for use as an apartment building.
