June 23, 2024 – The Savannah City Council is set to once again determine the fate of the Civic Center, with three options scheduled to be considered on Thursday. Read what else is on the agenda and who else is meeting in the week ahead.

The SEDA board of directors is holding a special-called meeting on Monday.

The agenda is now available to view. The board will consider a $21.8 million bond resolution and loan to International Paper as part of a refinancing plan for facility improvements to the Savannah Mill at 1201 West Lathrop Avenue.

The resolution comes after SEDA’s approval in February for the issuance of $130 million in bonds to “finance the costs of certain machinery, equipment and other personal property” at International Paper’s Savannah and Port Wentworth mills, as reported by Savannah Morning News.

The Historic Preservation Commission is meeting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at 112 E. State St.

The HPC will consider the Galvan Foundation’s request to rehabilitate a commercial building at 2001 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to serve as part of a the proposed campus for the planned Kiah Museum. In addition, Galvan is seeking to construct a staircase, wheelchair ramp, and elevator on the back side of the Kiah house as part of the effort to restore the property. With the goal of the Kiah Museum fulfilling its founder’s intentions of a “museum for the masses”, accessibility has been brought to the forefront, according to the project description.

Galvan through its local affiliate, Savannah Local Initiatives, is also seeking to construct a single-family home on a vacant lot at 2114 Bulloch St. as part of the Cuyler Brownville housing partnership with the city.

The Board of Registrars is meeting 12 p.m. on Wednesday at the office of Voter Registration, 1117 Eisenhower Drive.

The Chatham Area Transit Authority is meeting at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

The Savannah Zoning Board of Appeals is meeting at 10 a.m. on Thursday at 112 E. State St. 

The agenda is now available to view. The meetings are in-person, but the public can also access the meeting remotely by registering on the homepage.

The Tybee City Council is meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the public safety building, 78 Van Horne Avenue.

Tybee’s City Council will consider the adoption of the 2024-2025 fiscal year budget and maintaining the existing property tax rate, which is expected to generate about $2.76 million in net tax revenue. That is up from about $2.6 million due to a 5.68% increase in property values, according to the staff report.

The Savannah City Council is meeting at 2 p.m. on Thursday at City Hall, 2 East Bay St.

The agenda is now available to view. A workshop will be held at 11 a.m. before the meeting.

The meeting will be held at City Hall on the second floor in city council chambers. Remote viewing options include SGTV Comcast Channel 8, the city of Savannah YouTube page and the city of Savannah Facebook page.

The Savannah City Council will consider three option for the Civic Center site. The options include renovating the entire facility, including the arena, Johnny Mercer Theatre and community meetings rooms. The other option includes demolishing the entire facility or demolishing the arena and renovating the theater.

The Chatham County Commission is meeting at 9:30 a.m. at 124 Bull St. on Friday.
