June 25, 2026 – Georgia lawmakers say that a bead counting device dating back to 2700 BC is the only secure way to tabulate election results. A new state sanctioned senate committee, created by recent legislation, has stated its intention to require the abacus to be used by counties in future elections when counting ballots. The mandate is included in legislation to replace the use of QR codes, which are believed by some to be a creation of the devil (others attribute the creation to witches). In addition, the legislation requires the secretary of state to wear a dunce hat and sit quietly in the corner during the selection of any new voting systems.
Editor’s Note: This satirical cartoon was inspired by the recent approve by state legislators of SB 3EX, a measure that creates a legislative committee to develop recommendations for a new statewide voting system based on hand-marked paper ballots and ballot-on-demand printing. The bill also requires automatic manual recounts in certain close statewide races and expands post-election audit requirements. In addition, the legislation delays until Jan. 1, 2028, implementation of a provision in SB 189 that would prohibit the use of QR codes to tabulate votes on ballots cast using Georgia’s current voting system. The committee is required to submit recommendations for a replacement voting system by Jan. 31, 2027, with the goal of implementing a new system for the 2028 election cycle. The legislation also bars the secretary of state from participating in the selection, certification or procurement of a new voting system. The legislation was passed during a special session called to address a looming July 1 deadline banning QR codes for tabulating votes, adopted by legislators in 2024 who were influenced by false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. State lawmakers failed to adopt a legislative fix or any funding for a change during the regular session, resulting in the need for the special session.
