The release party for IMPACT Vol. 5, No. 1 is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. May 21 at Laney Contemporary, 1810 Mills B Lane. The event will feature catering by Sixby and cocktails by Savoy Society.

The new issue centers on Ossabaw Island and the cultural, ecological and artistic histories of Georgia’s barrier islands. According to ARTS Southeast, the publication explores themes of wildness, land memory, stewardship, inheritance and the role of artists in documenting fragile landscapes and communities.

The issue includes interviews and features examining Ossabaw’s relationships with artists and writers, the legacy of Sandy and Clifford West, and the importance of protected wild places in contemporary art and culture.

The edition will be released with four collectible covers featuring works by Mimi Plumb, Allison Janae Hamilton, Le’Andra LeSeur and John Earl.

Contributors to the issue include Beryl Gilothwest, Melissa Messina, Erin Dunn, Allison Janae Hamilton, Mimi Plumb, Gregory J. Harris, Le’Andra LeSeur, Trelani Michelle, Lisa Jaye Young, Josh Aronson and Rachel Waldrop.

The release party will also raise funds for the Ossabaw Island Residency, an ARTS Southeast program scheduled to launch in October. Inspired by the historic Ossabaw Island Project, the residency is intended to bring artists to the barrier island for retreat, research and creative work.

“The timing of this issue is deeply meaningful for ARTS Southeast,” Program Director Jon Witzky said in a statement. “As we prepare to launch the Ossabaw Island Residency this October, IMPACT Vol. 5, No. 1 gives us a way to honor the island’s extraordinary creative legacy while also helping build the next chapter of artist-centered work connected to Ossabaw.”

ARTS Southeast said guests attending the event will be able to purchase the new issue, support the residency program and meet artists, writers and community members involved in the project.

ARTS Southeast programming is supported in part by the City of Savannah. Sponsors for the Ossabaw Island Residency include the National Endowment for the Arts, the Suzanne Fitzallen Jackson Foundation, the Judith Alexander Foundation, Laney Contemporary and private donors.
